Eggs are – Vegetarian ?? In India, eggs are considered to be meat, and some vegetarians will not eat them. Usually, this is related to a religious practice. So are eggs non-vegetarian or vegetarian?
It is a well-known common belief and many people have reasoned out that eggs are non-vegetarian, since they not only come from a living being but also are potentially capable of reproducing a living being. On the other hand some people do believe that the locally purchased eggs from our daily store to be vegetarian as they are unfertilized eggs and neither do they have life nor are not capable of producing any life.
A team of Scientists fromNew Delhi have finally given an answer to the long-standing question of whether eggs are vegetarian or non-vegetarian, which might put an end to the debate once and for all.

Scientists explain that there are three parts of the egg – eggshell, egg yolk, and egg white. The egg yolk: The chicken egg starts as an egg yolk inside a hen. A yolk (called an oocyte at this point) is produced by the hen's ovary in a process called ovulation. It is mostly made up of proteins, cholesterol, and fat. The yolk whether or not it is fertilized is covered with a membrane structural fibers, and layers of albumin. The egg whites (albumen) only contains protein .
Once the hen is 6-8 months-old, she starts to lay one eggs every, one to one and a half days. However, it isn't necessary for the hen to mate before laying her eggs. These eggs are known as unfertilized eggs. The eggs that we buy from the local markets are also mostly unfertilized. The eggs that we consume on almost a daily basis do not have embryos. This means that the eggs have not developed enough to be at the stage where one would be eating an actual living being.
Based on the definition of vegetarian as a diet which excludes consumption of animal flesh, technically, yes, eggs are vegetarian, since they neither are animal flesh, nor there any killing of any animal involved in consuming eggs. Eggs are neither dead nor loving hence they can safely be classified as being vegetarian.
